The industry had questions – Tekstilretur and DM&T listened

Companies in both Herning and Copenhagen took part in the dialogue on the upcoming requirements for extended producer responsibility for textiles and footwear.

Tekstilretur and Danish Fashion & Textile (DM&T) held joint information meetings in Herning and Copenhagen in April about the upcoming extended producer responsibility for textiles and footwear.

The meetings gave companies an overview of the upcoming framework for producer responsibility, what they are expected to prepare for, and how the industry can become involved in the development of the new collective scheme, Tekstilretur.

At the same time, the meetings provided an opportunity to gather input and experiences from companies already trying to navigate the upcoming requirements and the circular transition of the textile industry.

What the industry needs

A key purpose of the meetings was to give businesses the opportunity to discuss their wishes, barriers and challenges related to the new producer responsibility, as seen from the producers’ perspective.

Tekstilretur is still in its early stages. As a member-driven organisation, we need to be structured in a way that delivers as much value as possible to our members.

The discussions were strongly shaped by producers’ experiences with implementing producer responsibility for packaging – an area with much to learn from.

From the discussions, we identified the following immediate priorities for what Tekstilretur should deliver to its members:

• Clear information on what needs to be done and when
• Guidance on interpreting requirements
• Help prioritising the requirements and tasks associated with producer responsibility, so that internal resources are used effectively
• Common standards and templates, so that each company does not have to develop its own procedures and documents from scratch
• Support for producers’ dialogue with suppliers, to ensure accurate and consistent documentation

It is important to us at Tekstilretur to deliver what makes the most sense for our members and helps make their day-to-day work with producer responsibility a little easier.

The input from the meetings will therefore guide how we shape member-facing information and tools going forward. We also welcome ongoing input at any time.

A strategic partnership for the industry’s transition

The strategic partnership between Tekstilretur and DM&T is built on a shared ambition to create a producer responsibility system that both works in practice and supports the development of a more circular textile market.

The collaboration includes knowledge sharing, international cooperation and joint industry dialogue. DM&T is also represented on Tekstilretur’s board.
