STATUS: PROVISIONAL AGREEMENT ON EXTENDED PRODUCER RESPONSIBILITY FOR TEXTILES

The European Parliament and the Council reached a provisional agreement in February 2025 on extended producer responsibility for textiles.

This means that producers will be responsible for financing the collection, sorting and recycling of their textile waste — in the same way as we know it from the many other producer responsibilities managed by the Retur family.

At present, implementation is expected in 2027, though there is uncertainty around the timeline.

What is certain, however, is that — as with other producer responsibilities — an eco-modulated fee is expected to be introduced. Your company’s contribution will depend on how sustainably and circularly your products are designed, as well as their lifespan and durability.

The agreement also addresses the challenges of ultra-fast fashion and overproduction, and seeks to ensure a level playing field for all types of companies regardless of size.

The next step is for the agreement to be formally approved by the European Parliament and the Council.

At Tekstilretur, we are following developments closely and will keep you updated through our newsletter, LinkedIn, webinars, events and website.

RETUR - YOUR PARTNER IN PRODUCER RESPONSIBILITY

Retur is Denmark’s largest family of non-profit producer responsibility organisations and your partner in managing producer responsibility for electronics, batteries, packaging, fishing gear and textiles.

As a non-profit organisation, we work exclusively for our members – companies in Denmark – and for a system that works for both businesses and society.

With over 20 years of experience, we translate legislation and requirements into solutions that work in practice. We bring producer responsibilities together across waste streams and make the complex manageable so you can focus on your business.

We work closely with authorities, municipalities and suppliers, and are part of Nordic and European collaborations. We deliver reliable ESG data and ensure legitimate waste streams.

But our goal is more than compliance. We work to lift valuable materials out of the waste stream and back into circulation so resources are recycled as much as possible and create value time and time again.
